I have received this question a few times in the last
couple of weeks.
QUESTION: It seems like the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu fighters
are dominating mixed martial arts competitions like
the UFC. So why don't you focus your self defense tactics
and techniques on a ground fighting system like this?
ANSWER: There are actually several reasons. First, most
of my subscribers and video students are not interested in
full contact, martial arts training.
They have no intentions
of going into the ring.
Second, the level of training required to be proficient at
a style like Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is not what most of my
readers and students want to do. It will require many year
of dedicated commitment to be proficient.
Third. Most of my subscribers are interested in the easiest,
quickest and most effective methods of self defense.
They
want to learn ways to defend themselves that will give them
the best chance of success in the shortest possible time.
The striking arts leave the most margin of error. They give
the average person the best chance. Poke someone in the eye,
knee them in the groin or hack them in the throat works a
very high percentage of the time and is easier to learn
than a rear naked choke.
Fourth, grappling arts require a lot of energy, flexibility
and endurance.
Many of my subscribers are older, out of shape,
weaker than their attacker might be (women for one example).
While I realize that some of my followers are true martial
artists and in good physical shape, many of them want to
stick with what works, the most simple and a less complex way.
Fifth, grappling arts do not work well against multiple
attackers.
The ground is not the place to be on the street.
You could be effectively dealing with one assailant, not
realizing there is one or more moving in to stomp your
head or cut you throat.
Sixth, striking arts tend to work better against a weapons
attack.
While many weapons defenses include controlling the
weapon (stand up grappling for example) they rely on striking
to soften an opponent and finishing as well.
Seventh, most (not all) of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu and other
grappling arts are more competition than street focused.
I
have seen more videos advertised as grappling for self defense
only to find them competition based. In many cases leaving their
eyes, groin and throat vulnerable to strikes and other hand
attacks.
Look, I am not saying that you don't need any ground fighting
skills.
What I am saying is that I believe the focus for the
average person should be on the quickest, simplest and most
effective methods which include striking.
This can be done
both standing and on the ground.
Once you have learned and are somewhat comfortable with the
stand up striking techniques you should learn some good basic
ground fighting like I teach in www.groundselfdefense.com/
I realize that whenever you write an article like this there
will be some who disagree.
Hey, that's their opinion and they
are entitled to it. But this is my forum and this is what I
firmly believe.
