Breaking bricks and blocks with hands, heads, legs and other body parts would improve your self defence skills?

I see tons of Youtube videos
of guys breaking bricks and
blocks with hands, heads, legs
and other body parts.

They EVEN hold contests to see
who can break the most.

But is there ANY use to this skill?

Can it improve your self defence
skills?

I agree that breaking construction
materials looks cool and badass.
However, I'm not sure if it is
useful in REAL combat.

First of all, bricks don't hit back.

Just because you have learned
to hit a solid object with the right
amount of speed and force is
NOT proof of your fighting skills.

Secondly, your opponent won't
stand on one spot, letting you
prepare your 'death' blow.

You will NOT be hitting a solid flat
object, but a moving body mass.
Mass of the opponent is higher
than that of a brick. Furthermore,
in a fight element of fear comes
into play.

There is also another trick to
this feat. When bricks are stacked
they still have some space between
them as they are separated with small
rods or sticks. It LOOKS like the
performer is breaking a stack of blocks,
while in reality he is using the momentum
to break every block one my one.

Some other similar feats include
breaking wooden sticks on head.

There is a technique to this
as well. The key is hitting with
the area closest to the hand that
is holding the stick. This will
inflict less damage and force the
mass of the longest end to go over
with momentum and break the stick
in half.

These are just a few of feats you
see performed in Shaolin Kung Fu
shows and related events.

The feats are fun to watch and
SOME require lifelong training to
master. However, when training your
punches stick to the good old boxing
bag.
