What about simplicity for effective street self defense ?
The more you can simplify what you are doing, the better chance you have of actually being able to pull the defense.
Is Possible to learn to fight in 5 min. with Krav Maga ?
We use the principle of 'point of reference repetition'. What this means is that while the initial response to various attacks may be somewhat different, the follow-up responses are the same or very similar. This requires that you learn many fewer techniques and makes learning much easier to remember.
Let me give you an example to clarify this: Let's take two different attacks and show how point of reference repetition can work. A frontal attack and an attack from the rear. For the example we will take a front bear hug (two hand grab around the arms and torso) and a rear bear hug. The initial response, obviously must be different for each of these attacks in order to stun the attacker and break the hold. But once that is done the follow up responses are (or can be) the same.
In Street Krav Maga Usa Self Defense we teach the student to step back with either foot (front bear hug) and start attacking with knee kicks. As soon as the hold is loosened you can then follow up with palm heel strikes, elbow strikes and more knee kicks or groin kicks. In the case of the rear bear hug we teach the student to step forward, slap the groin several times, drive the arm forward to break the hold then use a high rear elbow to the face or throat.
At that point we teach to quickly step around to face the attacker. Now we are at the 'point of reference'. From this point on you can follow up the same way you would for a front bear hug or really just about any frontal attack. So the reference point becomes the point in the defense that will be similar in many frontal and rear attacks. If someone practices these techniques, slowly with repetition, they will become 'wired in' so to speak and become the automatic reflex we need to defend during duress.
Using this system minimizes the number (and complexity) of the techniques we need to learn (and wire in) and therefore I believe gives the average person the best chance of success in a real attack.
With a little bit of effort by using your logic is possible to learn self defense in 5 min. At least the basic self defense counter attacks which could save your life one day!
