I have been reviewing a number of self defense DVDs over the past few months. I'm trying to find good material to implement myself and teach to my students (both at my school and eventually on DVD to my video students).
Wow, is there a lot of crap out there. I don't feel too bad if I can pick up just one thing. Maybe a technique or method which will improve what I am doing now. Lately I have not been seeing much, through my adrenaline stress filters (what I like to call my biased thought processes of what I think [and know] will or will not work under duress), that has much value on the street. Recently I purchased a five DVD set called th 'MultipliedForce Fighting System' (MFFS).
The ad copy (like so many of them) sounded too good to be true but some of what it said seem to make sense so I decided to invest some money and sent for the DVDs. They came pretty quickly which sort of surprised me being a United Kingdom based company. But I figured out they must have a US distributor because my package was addressed from the United States. When I got the chance to watch the first DVD I was pleasantly surprised on what I found. Russell Stutely has developed a way of striking he calls 'the wave form technique'.
Actually I was quite amazed in the amount of power the guys in the video were developing. And... Without much effort. In fact it looked so unbelievable that I started to think it was BS. It wasn't until I went to my dojo (training hall) and started practicing and using the 'wave' that I realized that they really had something here. DVDs two, three and four had a lot of simple throws, pressure point strikes, take downs, and some more striking material.
Probably some of this stuff would be hard to pull off in the street for most of us although I think the guy performing the video probably could. DVD number five went back to the wave form striking. While as you probably know I am not a big fan of pressure point fighting, they demonstrated some pressure point strikes that needn't be very well placed to work.
Again I was thoroughly impressed with the tremendous power they were generating on some kind of high density pads that were obviously not commercially sold. If anyone knows what kind of material they were using (and where to get it) let me know. Overall I would highly recommend the Multiple ForceFighting Systems DVDs. Volume I and V alone are well worth the money for the entire set.
