Subject: Military Self Defense Here is a recent email and question I got from one of my customers: "I was in the military and we did a rotation on hand to hand combat. We really didn't spend that much time with it and I feel what I learned was not all that great. Is military self defense/hand to hand combat realistic for the street?" Answer: It depends. When I went into the army as a regular recruit, we only did a small amount of hand to hand training as well. I already had done some martial arts training prior to my active duty, so some of the training to me seemed quite simple and somewhat impractical. If you look at the US military training manuals, even going back to world war II, the overall system was pretty good. It it (or was) just that the time allotted to this training was very minimal unless you went into the special forces. A number of years ago I was able to find a few of these manuals (some of which are quite rare) and even a couple of 16 mm hand to hand training films. Spending some time studying the manuals and watching the videos (which I later converted to DVD) I found that much of the military hand to hand training was quite good and yes, useful if used on the street. This, in my opinion, is particularly true of the striking portion of the training. Some of the throws might be difficult to pull off on the street unless you practiced them extensively with a partner. Overall though, you can learn a lot from the simplicity and directness of the military approach to hand to hand combat (self defense). The latest ground fighting manual is excellent using some of the most modern and effective techniques that can be pulled off, especially if you are not that well schooled in fighting on the ground.
