The Concept of Continuous Attack When many of us think of self defense we think in terms of being attacked in some way and then reacting to the particular type of attack and counter-attacking. In the past I have spoken of using a pre-emptive attack (attacking first, before the actual attack when you feel it is inevitable). This is sound self defense and I highly recommend it. So whether the physical attack comes first or you pre-empt, the concept of continuous attack (counter-attack) comes into play. Here's what a I mean... In many of my videos (and most self defense videos you will see) we show some sort of attack, some sort of defense or release and then two or three counter attack movements. We usually try to show the type of counter attacks that apply best to the initial attack (attack/response). The message I am trying to convey today is that once the 'fight' is on, you don't stop counter attacking until your attacker is out of commission or at least until the threat is stopped. Obviously this is a judgment call that you will have to make at the moment it happens. While I don't want to recommend that you continue past the point of stopping the threat, you should probably error on the side of safety. Meaning, make sure your attacker cannot respond back anymore. Most of us do not like violence. We don't really want to hurt someone. The key is to so to speak 'flip the switch' and become the aggressor once the fight is on. Look, I am assuming you used good judgment. That you didn't provoke the attack. That did everything you could to avoid the physical confrontation. If this is the case you have the right to do anything in your power to escape being injured or killed. So once the confrontation becomes physical, attack, attack and attack until your opponent is down and unable to fight back. Only then it is safe to flee the area and get help. What kind of counter attacks (continuous attacking) is best? Stay with the basics. Palm heels, elbows, knees, head butts, eye rakes and gouges and low kicks. Try to use the principle of mixing high and low attacks. If he covers high, go low. If he covers or evades low, go high. The important thing is to sustain a continuous attack as long as needed to stop the threat.
