Using Distraction in Self Defense
Sometimes using a distraction to buy you a few tenths of second can be a life saver. A distraction can be a slight motion, a movement of the eyes or a verbal statement or question. Other times it could be an initial strike that is not intended to take out an attacker but to conceal or set up a bigger strike. Let's first look at the latter type of distraction. The physical strike. Here's an example: Let's say you are grabbed by someone with a double collar (lapel) grab. I like to bring both hands up along side the attackers wrists and wave them slightly. Sort of saying no, no, please don't hurt me. Obviously a feigned compliant tactic. This gesture and look will give the attacker a strong signal that you are an easy victim and sort of takes his mental guard away. By the way the hands in that position serve several other purposes. 1. They are in position to stop a head butt if it comes. 2. They are 'up' in case he releases with one hand and throws a punch. 3. They are reasonably close to his face which brings up the next distraction move... Which is a palm slap to one side of the face. It should be a driving slap which turns his head to the side. Immediately bring the other palm in which will keep his head to the side as you knee him (or kick him with a shin kick to his groin). So the palm strikes, while they do little damage, distract him from the first strong strike which is a knee of shin to the groin. This then would be followed up more strikes. Back to the other types of distractions with another example. Suppose you are approached by someone from the front. They are in some way threatening or aggressive. You bring your hands up in an assertive manner and then LOOK over their shoulder by slightly turning your head to one side (keeping your peripheral vision on them at all times). Since they can't see behind them and probably won't turn their head to look (although if they do, even better) this look distracts them for an instant. What's behind him? Is it a friend of yours? Is it a witness? Is it a police officer? No matter it takes their focus off their initial goal which might be to intimidate you for compliance or attack. This gives you a small window to pre-empt their attack with your own. How about verbal distractions. An example: Someone is holding a weapon on you at close range. You have gone into a compliant posture (so the attacker feels you are not going to be a threat and will just do what he says or give you what he wants). This gives you a few seconds to think about what your action will be. Before you spring into action you ask him a question. What question? Well it really doesn't matter but the dumber the better. For example... Why do you have a purple face? or.. Do you F... pigs? Questions like these confuse the brain for a split second. Just the time you need to get in your initial strike or counter movement. Try practicing some of these distraction techniques. They really give you an advantage of a few tents of a second or more.
